Welcome

On behalf of the Balkan Geophysical Society (BGS) and the Association of Geophysicists of Serbia (AGS), you are cordially invited to take part in the 5th BGS Congress and

Technical Exhibition, Geophysics at the Cross-Roads, to be held in Belgrade, Serbia, from 10-16th May 2009.

The theme of the Congress, Geophysics at the Cross-Roads, mirrors several important attributes of modern geophysics. Since the beginning of this Millennium geophysics has developed into a leading discipline in the world’s resource industry. Geophysics crossed the boundaries of many disciplines bringing together geophysicists with geologists, geoscientists, civil engineers, archaeologists, mining and environmental engineers.

Geophysics at the Balkan region is also at the cross-roads. Turbulent times are over and we are looking into the future, celebrating the legacy of Milankovich. Geophysical community of BGS is rapidly growing, with several new member countries.

The 5th Congress of BGS will also include new concepts; in addition to the Technical program, an important side-event, Energy, Economy and Environment, is incorporated. The world energy experts will come face to face with the top representatives of WB, UNESCO, UNDP, UNEP, but also with ministers of energy and environment from the Balkan countries. Geological storage of CO2, an approach to mitigate climate changes, will be on the hot agenda. This is one of the Congress aims – to contribute towards achieving some of the UN Millennium Development Goals.

These new trends in the world’s resource industry indicate that geophysics is indeed at the cross-roads. Please come to Belgrade, participate in the Congress and contribute to the “new thinking”. Welcome!
